Privacy is the best policy when it comes to domain registrations. Avoid unwanted spam, and even potential identity theft, by being proactive about securing your WHOIS info.
There's many reasons to limit the amount of personal
information you share online.
Without Domain Privacy, your home address could be easily attainable by anyone online. A simple WHOIS search would reveal your name, address, and more!
Without Domain Privacy, your email address can easily be captured and added to spam mailing lists. This is unfortunately a very common spammer tactic.
Without Domain Privacy, even your phone number is easily acquired by virtually anyone. Put a stop to all those harassing phone calls before they even start!
A publicly-accessible database, known as WHOIS, contains the name, address, email address, and telephone number of all domain registrants for all domains. Domain Privacy masks your personal information within this database.
Your personal information will be masked, reducing spam, junk mail, and identity theft.

Please read our frequently asked questions about Domain Privacy or WHOIS.
WHOIS is fundamentally a database of domain owners, required by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) in order to maintain a public record of domain owners. While this has many benefits, it has also proven to have significant drawbacks in terms of privacy. Unless a domain utilizes Domain Privacy, then this database will contain the full name, mailing address, email address, and telephone number on the account to which the domain is registered.
Fortunately, the possibility of using information provided by the registrar (HostGator, in this case) can be used for WHOIS in place of the individual domain owner, given that the registrar maintains accurate records of the registrants under its service. In other words, since we know who owns the domains registered through us, ICANN allows our information to be used for WHOIS instead of yours. Effectively, our information is used to mask your information from public view.
The main benefit of Domain Privacy is, simply put, privacy. You retain complete control of your domain, however no one will be able to access your personal information via a WHOIS search. This protects you from identity theft, unwanted spam, and even potentially unwanted visitors at your home.
It's simple to transfer any existing domains you have with other registrars to your HostGator account. Enjoy all the included benefits, along with the added convenience of managing your entire online portfolio in one place.
